TBS Annual Dues Mailing

During August, you should have received the Temple Beth Sholom annual dues letter. Our 2009-10 dues income was down 13% from the previous year.  We are hoping that a paper dues letter, with a postage paid return envelope, will bring a better response than the emailed version we used last year. The letter includes suggested “fair share” contribution guidelines based on family income.  If you cannot make the suggested contribution, please give what you can. Dues may be paid in a lump sum or by payments spread throughout the year. If you did not receive the letter, please contact Dan Arnold for a copy.

Temple Work Party A Big Success

Many thanks to all who came to the work party on August 15 and worked feverishly for several hours to get the synagogue in shape for the New Year—Aaron, Angie, Ann, Armando, Avigayil, Candace, Dan, Gloria, Jacob, KateLynn, Lloyd, Michael, Tashanna, and Zev. Things are looking good both inside and out.

Save the Date—November 20

Saturday evening, November 20, we will gather at the Arnolds’ for a presentation by Lou and Cynthia Kustin. Earlier this year, Cynthia and Lou spent three months volunteering in Cambodia for American Jewish World Service. The presentation will include a brief introduction to American Jewish World Service, as well as a PowerPoint slide show and talk, covering both their travels in Cambodia and the various roles filled by the volunteers in their group.

Cynthia is a retired structural engineer and an AuTrain native. Lou is a retired school administrator who attended NMU as an undergrad.  The Kustins lived in Alaska for 25 years and settled in AuTrain after they retired about 2 years ago.

Watch future newsletters for details on the schedule for the evening.

Building Security

After finding windows and doors left unlocked and a significant item temporarily missing from the temple, the TBS board has decided to implement some simple security measures at the synagogue.

  • The front door lock is being replaced, and old keys will no longer work.  The new master key will be kept by the President.  A controlled number of additional keys (numbered and marked ‘do not duplicate’) will be signed out to those who need ongoing access to the building. If you need one-time or occasional access to the building, contact President Candace Worthington candaceLworthington@gmail.com or Vice President Shannon Ruiz shmceach@gmail.com to make arrangements.
  • A building access log has been placed by the alarm keypad, so that any concerns that arise can be resolved quickly and easily.  Please enter date, time and name in the log when you deactivate the alarm, and date time and name when you reset the alarm. In some cases, the person opening the building and the person closing the building will not be the same.  For example, the student rabbi might open the building before a service, with a board member closing the building after the oneg.
  • Library books may be borrowed at any time by using the check out list posted on the library door.
  • If you want to borrow any other items from the building, please contact Vice President Shannon Ruiz shmceach@gmail.com well in advance.  We want to keep track of what is being borrowed, by whom, and when it will be returned.  The board has decided that the Torah scroll and other ritual items will not leave the building.

A Big Thank You to Hoover’s Professional Tree Service

I arrived at TBS on August 9 to do some paperwork, and found Ray Hoover and his crew doing a complimentary trim of the trees and shrubs in front of the temple.  Ray Hoover has done this for us in the past, as he does for other faith communities in the area.  As a way of thanking him for this service, please consider calling Hoover when you need tree services, and let him know that you are a member of TBS. Candace

August 2010

Annual Work Party AND Congregational Picnic

Join us at the temple on Sunday morning, August 15, for a Work Party to get the place nice and spiffy for the New Year.  Early birds may join Candace and the coffee pot at 8:00 a.m. to get started. Others may choose to arrive a bit later in the morning. Please bring along anything you think might be useful, such as rags, cleaning products (we have a few), buckets, ceiling fan duster, carpet shampooer

After the work party (sometime between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m.) we’ll gather at Al Quaal Recreation Area for the Congregational Picnic. Kosher hot dogs, condiments and paper goods will be provided.  Please bring a dish to pass; contact Ann Arnold to find out what category of dish to bring. cgarnold12@charter.net

Former TBS Student Rabbi in the News  from Cary Gottlieb

Melissa Simon, our student rabbi during 2005-2006, was recently mentioned in an article in the Jewish newspaper The Forward (June 25, 2010).

"It keeps adults safe."  That's the explanation Rabbi Melissa Simon hears parents give kids about the bowl of colorful condoms in the front office of Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, the West Village gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender shul where she's a rabbinical intern.

The article goes on to explain the Reform Jewish view of contraception and safe sex, and how Melissa is working with other pastors.  It seems that our former student rabbi has found a good fit for her internship in New York City
