CHILDREN’S EDUCATION UPDATE – Our education series continues, and I must say I am more than impressed with Ms. Mallory Grugin.  Mallory led the Sukkot class on September 25 and had an excellent command over the kids and the core content of the lesson.  The children came away with valuable information about the Holiday. On a personal note, my little Avi told me stories about the Sukkah and its construction. Following is the list of the remaining Sunday School dates and the instructors who have committed to teaching.  Thanks to all who are participating and volunteering to teach.

TBS TORAH SCROLL HISTORY

Ann Arnold recently learned from Willard (Bill) Cohodas the following history of Temple Beth Sholom’s Torah scrolls, which are both from pre-Holocaust Europe and are quite old.

One Torah scroll came from the Fine family’s attic, where it had been stored for years.  Bill thinks it is 150 years old.

The second Torah scroll is from the Lowenstein family and is thought to be 160 years old.  The Lowenstein family included of 3 brothers and 4 sisters who were involved with the Lowenstein Store in Negaunee on the main street.  Apparently none of them married, and to Bill's knowledge they left no local Lowenstein descendants.

When the building project for Temple Beth Sholom was going on, Bill Cohodas, worried about the age of the scrolls, contacted Torah Replacement Experts.  They advised replacing the lacings and sent him some lemon oil infused thread.  On one Saturday, Willard re-stitched the scrolls himself.

Providing Torah covers was a project taken on by two classes of TBS religious school students, who worked to raise the money for their purchase from a supply house in New York City. They were brand new, in blue and in white.

The Shabbat candle stand and Torah dressing stand at Temple Beth Sholom came from the Lowenstein Store, and Bill had a carpenter adapt them for use on the bima.

It’s easy to take for granted what we see on a monthly basis. Let’s make a point of remembering and acknowledging the hard work and ingenuity of those who came before us, who created a synagogue that, after 59 years, still provides us with an uplifting environment for services.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – As summer draws to a close my thoughts are beginning to turn to the upcoming Fall Retreat and High Holy Days. Our last retreat was a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other in a more remote location and in a context that offered us the chance for team-work and camaraderie, as well as some individual reflection. I hope that this year's will be more of the same. I am also looking forward to getting to know Rabbi Niles Goldstein, who contacted me earlier in the summer and shared his affinity for the UP. Much like many of us, the UP seems to have gotten in his blood, and he is going to join us for the retreat both as a participant and a speaker. The retreat will also give us the chance to see one another before the late High Holy Days this year. If you haven't already, I hope you will consider joining us for this weekend away (Sept. 9-11) or even just stop by for a day.

I would like to give a special thank you to Candace Worthington who has been a great help to me during this time of transitioning into the role of president. Her willingness to help both me and the congregation at large has been inspiring and a lasting benefit.

Ann Arnold has also been a wonderful leader in terms of organizing the retreat this year and deserves praise for her attention to detail as well as her effort.

The rest of the board and all the volunteers who have helped this summer in maintaining the synagogue and getting ready for the upcoming year have been a blessing, and their work continues to enhance our synagogue community through their dedication.                           Shannon Ruiz, President

EDUCATION UPDATE–  Well, we kicked off the 2011-2012 year with our first lesson last Sunday! We had mostly the younger generation (age 3-5), one from the young Jewish students (age 6-11)—my man Danny, and no representation from the young adult group (age 11-17).  We felt the session went very well and we were able to cover our course material.  I would like to thank Shannon and Candace for instructing, as they had amazing patience and skill as teachers.  The students seemed to take to the lessons well and, on a personal note, my girls can't stop talking about the Shofar blowing and how excited they are to hear it "for real" during services. There is much more to come this year, and below is the Sunday School schedule for all age groups for the year. (The topics shown are for age 3 to 5.  The curriculum for age 6 to 11as well as for age 12 to 17 will follow in the next newsletter.)
